            Lessons in Horsemanship & Riding

Why Horsemanship Lessons:
Most riders begin riding  lessons because of a love of horses. We want to meet horses and ponies, get to know them,  hug and brush them, maybe become friends with a special "one" and we want to ride them.

Horsemanship lessons cover all the things we want to do with our horse when we are not riding them. Horsemanship lessons are usually a good first step in meeting horses & ponies. Over the course of riding lessons horsemanship lessons cover every aspect of the horse and rider relationship. Whether you are a beginner rider or a rider with experience horsemanship lessons and periodic reminders about safety around the barn and while handling horses help avoid accidents and definitely keep riders happy and smiling. Each lesson begins with horsemanship and ends with horsemanship. Learning about horsemanship is learning about horses, how they think and how to read their signals.  Lessons in horsemanship give the opportunity to learn and practice the "hand on" tasks of  grooming  and tacking and gives riders a "can-do" feeling.

This feeling of confidence carries over very effectively to the riding part of  lessons

Riding Lessons
The staff at PGRS love horses & ponies and it is thrilling to be able to share our love with our student riders.  We begin our lessons by helping riders feel welcomed and comfortable around the barn and safe when they are with their horses and ponies.  We have chosen to keep our riding program very small to insure getting to know each individual rider.  By limiting the number of riders in a lesson we are able to spend every lesson working with individual riders to realize their riding  dreams.

At each lesson and after the beginning horsemanship segment of a lesson the riders  bring their horses to the ring  to begin the mounted portion of the lesson.  Each lesson starts with stretching and warm up exercises and then moves into the lesson of the day. During the lessons we use a wide variety of equestrian sport training techniques in order to assist each rider to develop and recognize their own riding skills.  Relaxation exercises, visualization, natural riding games and musical drills are regularly used in conjunction with time tested traditional riding exercises in the ring.  From the beginning  to the end of each lesson instruction, demonstrations, help, and encouragement is given.  We want every one of our riders to experience success and enjoy the feelings of pride that come from their individual efforts. in riding.
