Lesson Descriptions

Our approach to riding lessons is different. Our program is new. We always take more time if time is available. We schedule our lessons so that our riders can come in to their barn and spend time before and after riding with their favorite horse. We understand that riders who love horses want to spend more time with horses. We know that riders need time to ask questions and discuss what interests them or their concerns. We feel riders are safer and learn better with longer, more comprehensive lessons in an unhurried and peaceful atmosphere.

We may request a new rider or a rider entering a class late in the term to take one or two private or semi-private 1 hour lessons in order to feel comfortable joining the group

Rough Riders

We have an on the job training program called Rough Riders (RR). This program is limited to 12 riders (ages 13 to 18) who with family permission have focused on horses and riding and want to turn their riding skill (W/T/C & jumping) and their horsemanship knowledge into marketable assets for jobs in summer camps and riding stables as they get older. Riders eligible for this program become our apprentices and work closely with our barn staff and senior instructors. They have riding two times a week. They take the RIT program when it is given. They do their community service by assisting instructors and mentoring young riders. They are expected to continue riding and assisting during the summer and winter holiday program. Candidates for this program present a short resume and an essay about themselves, their background, what they will contribute the riding program and outline the goals they wish to achieve while working as a RR. Candidates will take one or two private assessment lessons in order to evaluate riding skills and they will take a written or oral exam on horsemanship. At the end of each term each RR will receive an oral job assessment.

The RR program prepares riders to take the national certification tests required for most horse jobs and to be sufficiently prepared to work in horse programs around the country.
