Our riders share in horse adventures, just like the stories
they read in books! This program gives riders who do not own
horses the opportunity to enjoy being part of a working horse
farm, to ride in a beautiful country setting, enjoy miles of
trails & the friendship of wonderful horses or ponies.
Safety First through developing good horsemanship and strong
riding skills are Potomac Glen’s priorities! To accomplish our
training goal of 100 % safety through good horsemanship, our
riders receive instruction from their first lesson about handling
horses and the nuances of horse behavior.
When appropriate, riders are afforded the opportunity to observe
horses as well as given a chance to work and care for the horses they
ride. Through gaining horsemanship knowledge and practicing horsemanship
skills riders learn to anticipate & understand horse behavior and
are better able to keep themselves safe. As all riders grow in the sport
they want to spend more time around the barn. To satisfy this normal
desire, our “hands-on” approach is central to the success of our
program. All riders, especially those working at trot and above, should
be prepared to schedule additional time before and after each lesson
when invited, to care for their horses.
As we work with riders to accomplish our training goal of 100% safety
through developing strong riding skills we use a wide variety of
innovative sport training techniques. Relaxation exercises,
visualization, natural riding games and musical drills are used in
conjunction with time tested riding exercises in the ring. When riding
skills are sufficient, trail classes are offered for relaxation and
skill enhancement. Each lesson will challenge riders to improve their
skills in horsemanship and riding and to develop a “can do”
attitude. Whether lessons are taken once or twice a week or just a few
times each month, every rider receives the same careful and complete
instruction in the horse, horse care and riding. We look for all our
riders to experience success & feel pride in their equestrian sport
accomplishments.
