Our mission is to provide riders who do not own horses the time
to enjoy being part of a working horse farm, the opportunity to
ride in a beautiful country setting, enjoy miles of trails & the
opportunity to develop friendships with wonderful horses and
ponies. Our aim is to provide a harmonious environment in which
people, children and adults who love horses, can meet and work in
an atmosphere of kindness and joy. |

Our riders live a horse adventure -- just like the stories they read
in books!
Cross country trail classes are offered to older riders who
have mastered the basics of walk, trot and canter, are using their
aids effectively, and have developed confidence and a “can do”
attitude. |
What do we consider most important – Safety!
A focus on 100 % safety for students, visitors and staff around the
barn and the horses.
From the first lesson at Potomac Glen our “hands-on” approach combines
experience with careful instruction on handling horses & ponies and all
aspects of horse behavior.
 | Riders are encouraged to ask questions and make observations about
horses... |
 | Riders are taught a series of smart safety rules that keep them safe
as they work in the barn and handle horses. |
 | Riders are given the time to learn and practice simple commands that
support kindness and authority. |
 | Riders are less fearful with horses and ponies when they know that
they can keep themselves safe. |
A focus on 100% safety in the riding ring during mounted lessons for
riders and staff.
Our schooling horses and ponies are well trained and even tempered. All
riders are mounted on size appropriate horses and ponies. We use a wide
variety of games and musical drills, relaxation exercises, visualization,
natural riding and balancing exercises in conjunction with traditional
riding exercises to develop safe horsemanship habit and strong riding
skills. A rider first must learn a skill, and then practice the skill
enough times that it becomes a habit and only then is the skill said to be
skill confirmed.
