Pony Pals Program
The Pony Pal program, for children ages 8 - 10, is a semester
series of one hour lessons taught during weekday hours. Lessons
may be taken either once or twice a week. Pony Pal classes are
limited to 4 - 5 riders; 2 to 5 ponies may be used in each lesson
depending on lesson plan for that day. All Pony Pal classes are
formed with special care given to individual age, level of
maturity and level of physical development. Each class is
conducted with the safety of the rider foremost in the mind of our
instructors. |
Children entering this program may be: Short Stirrup riders beginning
mounted group work; beginner riders from other programs with a
background of consecutive lessons which have prepared them to safely
begin work in small mounted class; or children entering our riding
school for their first riding experience. Lessons focus on the
development of accuracy and concentration skills appropriate to safe
riding in a group. It is important to note that the physical skills of
the rider are enhanced by their growing ability to concentrate and focus
while riding. A decrease in concerns and fears will also be noticed as
these young riders improve their skills and spend time with the horses
and ponies at our barn.
Mounted lessons include:
 | mastering basic riding preparation (checking and adjusting tack) |
 | improving mounting skills from the ground, using a mounting block
or taking a `leg up' properly |
 | improving rider control |
 | how to post on the correct diagonal at the walk |
 | the rudiments of beginning trot work |
 | learning mounted games that aid in the development of rider
abilities and increase levels of self-confidence |
On the ground lessons in horsemanship are given in grooming, points
of the pony and parts of the tack. Once Pony Pal riders reach a comfort
level that allows them to ride safely with others in a group lesson and
carry out directions in a secure and accurate manner, they may be
matriculated into the Stablemates program
by age 10.
