Rough Riders

Rough Riders is a special year-round program for riders (ages 13 and up) who are working at canter and who would benefit from more hours of riding and horsemanship, more time in the barn, and increased responsibility by leasing and working with one of our special horses a sense of comradeship and having their own barn. The enrollment is limited to 36 students per year and participation is based on the ability to demonstrate strong naturalized riding skills, which include: smooth transitions from walk through canter; work without stirrups; bareback riding; and appropriate knowledge of horsemanship.

Rough Riders ride year-round in the after school program and attend at least two weeks of summer riding school to augment the riding and horsemanship lessons taken during the school year. From September to June the program consists of two lessons a week, one lesson is taken during after school hours and one lesson may be taken on Saturday. If a Saturday time is impossible the rider will take the second lesson during the after school hours. Rough Riders may still come to the barn to work between the hours of 12:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturdays. The Saturday hours are the same for all Rough Riders regardless of their lesson schedule. Class size is 6 - 8 students, but may include more riders in order to practice drill team precision riding, and controlling horses in larger group situations.

Riding lessons include a base in balance seat equitation, combined training, and cross country work. Horsemanship lectures include all aspects of show preparation, basic vet care, nomenclature appropriate to higher levels of riding and increased understanding of basic training techniques. As Rough Riders becomes more dedicated and serious they begin to want to explore different aspects of the sport. They become interested in competition, think about working at our barn, they begin to realistically understand all the costs and responsibilities of horse ownership, and they come to consider the coaching staff at Potomac Glen as mentors.
